Chair Stevens questions 90-day transition timeline and impact on workers
Stevens challenges the 90-day transition period as too short for both families and workers losing jobs. Commissioner Jones-Gaston references successful transition of 5,000 families during COVID in six months. Stevens calls the response cold and advocates for protecting human service workers.
You should know that as part of the end of contract, immediately as the providers are notified, we have a team specifically dedicated to reviewing each and every case
family that is involved actively in prevention.
The decision about the next steps are made together with the provider, ACS, and the family.
That is that if the family decides that this is a time when a case can close and we can determine that that's an appropriate decision, then we go ahead and make a case closure.
So it is...
It's a process that is very well thought out and one that I'm personally very proud of, despite the fact that it means that we are ending a contract.
What were these contracts in?
So, um...
I'm going to ask Margaret to help me with that question.
Because I...
Savings were projected for FY27.
We know that we need at least 90 days to continue the case management to transfer cases.
And so...
So we're saying 90 days.
We know that we need 90 days from the beginning of the implementation in order to transfer all cases.
I should say that we transferred 5,000 families in a six-month period during COVID, and we did so successfully.
So while 90 days seems like a very short time, I do believe that we have a dedicated team that will make sure that every family and providers get the support that they need to make this transition.
I mean, I just...
Yes, the families is also a factor in this too, but 90 days for folks who are now out of a job is also a huge factor.
So we can't pretend like that's not part of the conversation.
Like I don't, I agree.
It kind of felt cold, so.
It's not.
I'm sorry, guys.
This ain't my hearing.
Don't worry.
When we go back to school, we'll be crazy.
But sorry, guys.
But that's kind of upsetting.
And, you know, this budget isn't complete.
So my hope is that we come up with a better solution than 90 days of thinking about the transition of families and figuring out a better way to have savings because, again.
Everybody's talking about an affordable city on both sides.
And that don't sound like we are thinking about workers, right?
I feel like we've passed multiple bills around workers in this council.
So my hope is that my colleagues get along boards for us to fight to make sure that these workers are also protected.
Because the human service sector.
keeps getting hit.
So, you know, I hope other, you know, folks get on board with this.
Because that is kind of heartbreaking to think that people will be losing their jobs in 90 days.
