Chair Stevens questions adult literacy forward initiative adoption

New York City Council · May 28, 2026 · starts 4:06:35 · 49 sec

Stevens asks if DYCD is open to adopting aspects of the council-funded Adult Literacy Forward initiative. Officials say they support the council's pilot but prefer their current model with increased price per participant, and welcome council support to expand slots.

Althea V. Stevens

The adult literacy forward initiative is currently funded by council, which was created in partnership with the expertise of providers.

Althea V. Stevens

It focuses on meeting the community needs with an innovation and holistic approach to adult literacy.

Althea V. Stevens

Is DYCD open to adopting aspects of this program for DYCD's RFP adult literacy program?

Speaker

We're happy to continue to support the council's pilot.

Speaker

As you will recall, there was a prior iteration before adult literacy forward.

Speaker

And for our part, we believe that we learned from that model as well as a pilot that we did.

Speaker

That's why we increased to a significant incentive the price per participant under the current literacy model.

Speaker

So we currently like and abide by the model that we have, and we'd be happy to continue to receive support from the councils we have in prior years to expand the number of slots made available under the model.
