Q&A

Councilmember Wong questions SYEP funding sources

New York City Council · May 28, 2026 · starts 3:50:54 · 46 sec

Wong asks whether the $246M SYEP budget is primarily city or state funds. Officials confirm it's primarily city tax levy with a small TANF allocation from the state. Wong advocates for increasing SYEP scale and state funding.

Phil Wong

Thank you.

Phil Wong

Okay.

Phil Wong

Quick question.

Phil Wong

Quick.

Phil Wong

City or state, right?

Phil Wong

The $246 million for SYEP, is that primarily city funds or state?

Speaker

It's primarily city funding with a small allocation of TANF funding from the state.

Phil Wong

As I recall, SYEP historically gets state funding, or am I wrong here?

Speaker

The scale of the state funding is very small in comparison to the amount of city tax levy that we have funding the program.

Phil Wong

I see it's so successful.

Phil Wong

I think the size of SYEP should increase, and I don't see that happening.

Phil Wong

So please look into that.

Phil Wong

Thank you.
