Q&A

Brooks-Powers on bus lanes, potholes, and Rockaway street lighting

New York City Council · May 29, 2026 · starts 1:32:38 · 2 min 29 sec

Brooks-Powers asks about protected bus lane mileage, pothole repairs in Southeast Queens, street lighting outages on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and dangerous pothole conditions at the Rockaway YMCA entrance.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

Thank you, Chairs, and thank you, Commissioner and Commissioners, for your testimony today.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

I'm going to ask all my questions at once.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

I can repeat anything that you need me to thereafter.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

The executive plan includes an additional $16.9 million of city funding in fiscal year 27 for the bus action plan.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

In 2020,

Selvena Brooks-Powers

25 DOT completed nearly 21 miles of protected bus lanes short of the 30 mile requirement set by the New York City Streets Plan.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

With this additional funding in place for fiscal year 27, how many miles of protected bus lane does DOT

Selvena Brooks-Powers

plan to build in the upcoming fiscal year.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

This executive budget also allocates an additional $3 million for a pothole blitz.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

We continue to see terrible road conditions in the 31st Council District.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

Can you share which roads in Southeast Queens and the Rockaway Peninsula

Selvena Brooks-Powers

DOT plans to repair with this additional funding.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

And can DOT provide an update regarding the street lighting along Rockway Beach Boulevard from Beach 62nd Street to Beach 73rd Street?

Selvena Brooks-Powers

These lights have been out for months now and cause a major public safety hazard to local residents.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

And then last, I'm going to pick up on an email exchange that we had with Commissioner Garcia earlier.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

In my district, there are persistent...

Selvena Brooks-Powers

In dangerous pothole conditions at the parking lot entrance of the Rockaway YMCA on Beach 73rd Street.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

The current state of the entrance is unacceptable.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

The large potholes pose a significant risk of vehicle damage.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

damage and potential physical injury to our youth and seniors who rely on the YMCA daily and or who just cross that corridor because we've had a number of crashes at that intersection as well.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

Could you please confirm if this location is currently on the DOT list for repairs?

Selvena Brooks-Powers

DOT has also indicated that that coordination with DEP is needed to move forward, but we can't wait any longer, so someone has to take the mantle on this.

Selvena Brooks-Powers

What is the timeline for this joint repair with DEP?

Selvena Brooks-Powers

And again, I can repeat anything that needs to be.

Mike Flynn

Thank you so much, Council Member.
