Q&A

Lee on public engagement and implementation percentage for bus lanes

New York City Council · May 29, 2026 · starts 1:00:07 · 1 min 36 sec

Lee asks what percentage of bus funding goes to implementation. Flynn estimates 50-70% goes to actual bus lanes, with the rest supporting related work. Lee also asks about new bus shelters, with 100 planned this year.

Linda Lee

Does any part of this funding go towards public engagement?

Linda Lee

How much and what specific actions would be taken to engage the public?

Eric Beaton

So absolutely, public engagement is a key part of expanding any project, including bus lands.

Eric Beaton

And just an example of that, as was mentioned before, we have our street ambassador on street units that go out and meet people at bus stops, go business to business down corridors.

Eric Beaton

And as we're doing more of these projects, we want to make sure we're not just spreading that group more thinly and doing less outreach, but we're staffing up that group, for example, to be able to do the same amount or more outreach with each of the projects that we do.

Linda Lee

As a percentage, how much of this funding is dedicated to the implementation of bus lanes?

Mike Flynn

Thank you for the question, Chair.

Mike Flynn

So as Deputy Commissioner Beaton said, a bus lane can be many different things.

Mike Flynn

I'd say on average it's probably about 50 to 70% of it will be for the actual bus lanes, and there will be support for all this work in the new need as well.

Linda Lee

When you get the percentage, I would be grateful if you can share that with us.

Linda Lee

How many new bus shelters will be installed this year, particularly in transit deserts and along high ridership routes?

Mike Flynn

So we're going to be installing an additional 100 shelters this year, and thanks to the investment in this executive budget, we're able to install another 100 per year for the next two years as well.

Linda Lee

Great.
