Brewer and LaPetrie discuss youth officer coordination with DOE

New York City Council · Jun 1, 2026 · starts 3:22:51 · 2 min 18 sec

Brewer asks about coordination between youth officers and DOE regarding student smoking around schools. LaPetrie details a revamped juvenile crime strategies desk and an all-day stakeholder meeting with DOE, ACS, prosecutors, and probation.

Gale A. Brewer

Thank you.

Gale A. Brewer

Also on the youth officers, it's more for me coordination because the young people leave the high school.

Gale A. Brewer

Unfortunately, there's a lot of morning smoking, lunch smoking, after school smoking, et cetera, in the neighborhood.

Gale A. Brewer

And the youth officers get stuck with this responsibility, although I think it's more the Department of Education that should be out there talking to the young people.

Gale A. Brewer

So I've actually tried to get some officers, some people from DOB to go out, et cetera.

Gale A. Brewer

So my question to you is, because people in the neighborhood complain, understandably, on their stoop, in their community gardens, and so on.

Gale A. Brewer

So I guess my question is, what is the coordination between, even though we work at it at the precinct level, I think DOB should be doing more.

Gale A. Brewer

So I'm just wondering at what point do you say to DOE enough?

Gale A. Brewer

I mean, this is more of a policy issue than a numbers issue, but it is creating a lot of havoc unnecessarily.

Gale A. Brewer

I'm just wondering what you think should be the policy there.

Gale A. Brewer

You have a thought on this?

Chief LaPetrie

So I'll just give you general terms again.

Gale A. Brewer

I appreciate it.

Gale A. Brewer

It's pretty constant.

Chief LaPetrie

So we had revamped our juvenile crime strategies desk to take that, what you're talking about, and make it front and center.

Chief LaPetrie

And we just had a meeting chaired by the director that oversees the juvenile crime strategies desk, who is an ex-prosecutor.

Chief LaPetrie

With

Chief LaPetrie

All the stakeholders when it comes to juvenile crime, DOE, ACS.

Chief LaPetrie

Obviously, the prosecutors, not only on the family court side, court counsel side, but on the DA's side, on the youth part side.

Chief LaPetrie

Juvenile probation.

Chief LaPetrie

It was an outstanding meeting.

Chief LaPetrie

It was an all-day meeting.

Chief LaPetrie

I actually went and spoke.

Chief LaPetrie

So we are really, really trying to...

Chief LaPetrie

Focus on the two sides, the at-risk side, that is not what we're looking to do as far as arrests.

Chief LaPetrie

We're looking to visit that family, we call them youths at risk.

Chief LaPetrie

And then unfortunately on the other side, when it comes to violent crime, there has to be consequences.

Chief LaPetrie

There has to be consequences.

Gale A. Brewer

I just thought we kept up to date for how we can work on it together because it's constant.

Gale A. Brewer

Thank you.

Chief LaPetrie

Thank you.
