Chair Lee presents NYPD budget details and Council priorities

Thank you, Speaker.

On May 12, 2026, the administration released the executive financial plan for FY26 to FY30 with a proposed FY27 budget of $124.7 billion.

The New York Police Department's proposed FY27 budget, as the Speaker mentioned, of $6.59 billion

represents 5.3% of the administration's proposed FY27 budget in the executive plan, and this is a decrease of $110.9 million, or 1.7%, from the $6.7 billion originally budgeted in the FY27 preliminary plan.

This decrease results from several actions, mostly from uniform and civilian PS accruals, vacancy reductions, and vehicle capitalization.

As of April 26, NYPD's headcount was approximately 1,500 less than their FY26 budgeted headcount.

In the Council's preliminary budget response, we called on the admin to add units of appropriation for greater transparency into NYPD spending.

In addition, we call on the

on the administration and YPD to utilize asset forfeiture dollars for eligible costs that expand your investigative resources before calling on city tax levy dollars.

Although additional units of appropriation were not added to the executive plan, we hope the adopted budget will include them and we look forward to exploring how asset forfeiture can be used in the future.
