New York City Council · Jun 1, 2026 · starts 0:27:55 · 40 sec

Speaker Menin asks about the connection between staffing levels and crime reduction progress, noting NYPD's uniform headcount is 1.5% below budgeted levels.

Julie Menin

Great.

Julie Menin

Thank you so much, Commissioner, for your testimony.

Julie Menin

And I know we've got a number of different questions, so I look forward to the dialogue on this.

Julie Menin

So first of all, NYPD's current actual uniform headcount of 34,497 is 1.5% less than the budgeted headcount of 35,025.

Julie Menin

Since the last time you appeared before us for the budget hearing, it's clear that the department has made progress in filling vacancies and hiring new officers, and we commend you for that.

Julie Menin

How do you think about the connection between the department's staffing level and the progress NYPD has made to drive down murders and shootings?
