Williams questions Tisch on hate crime data discrepancy
Deputy Speaker Williams asks about discrepancies in hate crime data between Tisch's testimony and other reports showing an 11.8% jump. Tisch explains the reports referenced Q1 data while her numbers include April, and small numbers can shift percentages significantly.
Hello, Commissioner.
Just a quick question about something you said in your testimony around hate crimes.
You had mentioned that it was down 5.4%, but...
We saw some reports that show a jump to 11.8% and that rapes are also up.
So just wanted to know if you can explain like the differences between like your testimony and some reports that we saw that says.
Yes, the reports that you saw referenced the first quarter of the numbers at the end of the first quarter of the year.
So January, February, March.
The numbers that I gave account for April as well.
And so it changed.
You know, these are, hate crime is a terrible thing, but these are small-ish numbers compared to overall crime.
So a few crimes can make a big difference in terms of up or down.
Thank you.
