Council Member Brewer on records management, staff retention, and support for 9/11 funding
Brewer suggests the 9/11 investigation could serve as a model for DOI's capabilities in complex investigations, raises concerns about disorganized city warehouse records, and notes the council previously hired DOI-trained investigators who were excellent. She pledges to fight for the 9/11 funding and emphasizes the Article 78 win demonstrates why it's needed.
I also, I think that there are, you know, that this would be a wonderful example if we get the funding, which I hope we will, to state that
the Department of Investigation has full capability of doing these, what I would probably be challenging and complicated investigations.
This would be an example.
And that this is the way that we should be looked at for the future.
There's not only waste and fraud, there's also just better government.
I have a feeling, I could be wrong, that there are a whole bunch of boxes and records around the city that are in different warehouses that need to have some kind of organizational
improvement, shall we say.
And so I'm hoping that in addition to this, that there is that also comes about.
I've been in several warehouses recently, and oh my goodness, nobody knows what's exactly there.
So I think this would be a good example to try to use for others.
And then just finally, I just want to agree with my colleagues saying you need the funding to be able to do the work.
That you have been assigned.
Without the funding, you cannot do it.
I have to say that we did, some years ago, steal some of your staff who came to the city council as investigators, and they're fabulous, and attorneys, and they're fabulous, and you train them very well, or your agency trained them very well.
So you do need to retain, that's a complicated,
job to be an investigator and to do it well.
That was so important.
So I'm just here to say we're all going to fight for the money for this particular 9-11.
I think that the fact that, you know, the Article 78 was won is a perfect example of why we need to do it, because obviously the city has not done their job in terms of responding to the FOIL.
That's a huge win for the 9-11 Health Watch.
Thank you very much, and I look forward to...
Making sure that this information is available to the public.
Thank you.
Thank you.
