CM Aldebol on hospital violence interruption program expansion

New York City Council · Jun 5, 2026 · starts 5:47:04 · 1 min 25 sec

Aldebol asks about the violence interruption program at Jacobi. Katz describes the Guns Down, Life Up program expansion to all hospitals including new programs at Bellevue and Woodhull, with no current plans to transfer to OCS but willingness to coordinate.

Shirley Aldebol

And I have a question about the violence interruption program.

Shirley Aldebol

It's been a phenomenal, successful program.

Shirley Aldebol

I've had the opportunity to meet with dedicated staff at the SUV program at Jacoby Hospital.

Shirley Aldebol

Are there plans to expand these programs?

Shirley Aldebol

You know, protect the funding for these programs.

Shirley Aldebol

And is this program going to go under Office of Community Safety?

Dr. Mitch Katz

So guns down, life up, right?

Dr. Mitch Katz

And we're going to continue to expand them.

Dr. Mitch Katz

We've now both expand them at the hospitals, as in the case of Jacoby, but also we're now creating one at Bellevue and one

Dr. Mitch Katz

There's another new one, Woodhall, we did last year.

Dr. Mitch Katz

I'm blocking on.

Dr. Mitch Katz

Maybe South Brooklyn.

Dr. Mitch Katz

I have not heard any intention to take them to a different office of community safety, but we would want to coordinate with them.

Dr. Mitch Katz

I mean, that's what they are, right?

Dr. Mitch Katz

I mean, they're ways of preventing violence using peers and violence prevention specialists.

Dr. Mitch Katz

So, you know, I'm very supportive of working with other people, and that's their tradition anyway.

Linda Lee

Thank you so much.

Dr. Mitch Katz

Thank you.
