CM Brewer on bike and e-bike accident trends at H&H hospitals

New York City Council · Jun 5, 2026 · starts 5:28:29 · 2 min 1 sec

Brewer asks about bike crashes and e-bike accidents. Katz, as a manual bicycle rider, blames e-bikes and scooters for increased accidents due to speed, noting many wrist fractures at Bellevue. He emphasizes everyone needs to follow traffic laws.

Gale A. Brewer

All right, now about this, I have to deal with bike.

Gale A. Brewer

Pass and bike.

Gale A. Brewer

I know I saw the helmet.

Mercedes Narcisse

Oh, wow.

Mercedes Narcisse

Okay.

Dr. Mitch Katz

All right.

Dr. Mitch Katz

Go ahead.

Gale A. Brewer

Okay.

Gale A. Brewer

So I have to deal with people like bikes and people don't like bikes.

Gale A. Brewer

That's how it works.

Gale A. Brewer

And so when you try to build a new...

Gale A. Brewer

I would say infrastructure, all hell breaks loose.

Gale A. Brewer

My question is, in the papers, mostly the post, there's a lot of concern upping the number of, I would say, crashes, accidents, or not.

Gale A. Brewer

In other words, do you see more at Bellevue, or is it just other?

Gale A. Brewer

Hospitals that are racking up.

Gale A. Brewer

Give me a sense of what you think we are with this industry in terms of...

Dr. Mitch Katz

Accidents are up, but I would personally, as a manual bicycle rider, I blame the e-bikes and these electronic scooters because they just go way faster.

Dr. Mitch Katz

And that's what causes the accidents, right?

Dr. Mitch Katz

It's the fact that people are coming at you really quickly.

Dr. Mitch Katz

And so we've seen a lot more accidents.

Gale A. Brewer

At Bellevue too, or at all your hospitals.

Dr. Mitch Katz

All hospitals indefinitely at Bellevue and a lot of scooters, a lot of wrist fractures.

Dr. Mitch Katz

And, you know, I think the issue of the bike lanes, again, as someone who uses them all the time, is that you're still...

Dr. Mitch Katz

supposed to follow the law.

Dr. Mitch Katz

Like when the light turns red, you stop.

Dr. Mitch Katz

Right.

Dr. Mitch Katz

A bike lane is not a, you know, welcoming to go through a red light.

Dr. Mitch Katz

And so everybody needs to, you know, pay attention.

Linda Lee

So, sorry, one quick thing.

Linda Lee

Can we take a quick pause because our public advocate has to go to the airport, and then we'll go back to Councilmember Brewer right after.

Linda Lee

Great.
