Chair Schulman on Bronx Asthma Center coordination with providers

New York City Council · Jun 5, 2026 · starts 0:51:45 · 2 min 24 sec

Dr. McNatt details coordination through the NICAN asthma network with FQHCs, CBOs, and faith-based organizations. The funding supports technical assistance to primary care practices in the South Bronx, creating an ecosystem across schools, primary care sites, homes, and the action center.

Lynn C. Schulman

How will the Bronx Asthma Center coordinate with hospitals, primary care providers, schools, and community-based organizations in the Bronx?

Dr. Alistair Martin

Yeah, I'm gonna say a few words about this and then gonna turn it over to Lydia to share a little bit more.

Dr. Alistair Martin

So you asked about asthma centers.

Dr. Alistair Martin

Sorry, did you ask about the schools?

Lynn C. Schulman

I said, how will the Bronx Asthma Center coordinate with hospitals, primary care providers, schools, and CPOs?

Dr. Alistair Martin

Okay, I'm going to call up Dr.

Dr. Alistair Martin

McNatt to the table.

Dr. Alistair Martin

Yeah, so we are coordinating in this work through a network called NICAN, which is basically the New York City Asthma Network.

Dr. Alistair Martin

This is a network of community-based organizations, provider groups, et cetera, who can help us to support individuals with asthma in the Bronx.

Dr. Alistair Martin

I'm going to hand it over to Dr.

Dr. Alistair Martin

McNatt to share a little bit more.

Council Staff

Morning.

Council Staff

Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, for the council members today?

Dr. McNatt

Yes, thank you.

Council Staff

You may begin.

Dr. McNatt

Good morning and thank you for the question.

Dr. McNatt

We're excited to be able to talk about and center the Bronx Asthma Initiative.

Dr. McNatt

And you're correct, there is a lot of collaboration that is and will be taking place across the South Bronx.

Dr. McNatt

The work that we do with federally qualified health centers, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, as well as the Asthma Network,

Dr. McNatt

help us to be able to implement the kinds of programs that the commissioner described, but also create an ecosystem that makes it easier for community members and families and their children to navigate asthma care within this environment.

Dr. McNatt

And so in addition to some of the examples you heard from the commissioner, this funding will also be supporting our support and technical assistance to primary care practices in the South Bronx.

Dr. McNatt

So we'll be working with dozens of primary care practices around how they improve the quality of care for children with asthma.

Dr. McNatt

And so this is really an opportunity for a defined ecosystem.

Dr. McNatt

Work is happening in schools.

Dr. McNatt

happening in your primary care sites, it's happening in your home, and it's also happening in the action center that the commissioner described.

Dr. McNatt

Thanks so much for the question.
