Chair Lee outlines DOE FY27 budget and savings plan
Lee presents DOE's proposed FY27 budget of $37.9 billion, noting the $105.8 million decrease from the preliminary plan due to a $922.2 million savings plan offset by restorations and expansions.
DOE's proposed fiscal 2027 budget of $37.9 billion represents 30.5% of the administration's proposed FY27 budget in the executive plan.
This is a decrease of $105.8 million, or 0.3%, from the $37.6 billion originally budgeted in the FY27 preliminary plan.
This decrease results from several actions, mostly a $922.2 million savings plan, which is offset by increased funding to restore learning to work
and early childhood and education outreach, as well as expansions of Every Child and Family is Known, special education pre-K, and teacher recruitment efforts.
As of April 2026, DOE's pedagogical headcount was 2,936 less than their fiscal 2026.
budgeted headcount, while their non-pedagogical headcount was 890 more than budgeted.
