CM Maloney on AI tools in education and AI literacy
Maloney asks how AI tools are being used in classrooms and how CUNY prepares AI literacy. Provost Alvero describes the $3.2 million AI innovation fund across four areas: education and literacy, student support, ethical implications, and an upcoming AI 101 course.
Okay, and on artificial intelligence, I'm wondering if you could paint a picture on how those tools are being used as educators in the classroom and also how you're preparing AI literacy skills.
If I don't let the provost answer that, she will explode.
So last year we received some funding from the state in AI and we created an AI innovation fund and we allocated $3.2 million across the 25 colleges across four specific areas.
One was AI education and literacy.
So how faculty created courses, started embedding it within the general education framework.
We also have embedded it into an AI-enabled student and academic support.
So looking at the academic advisement service.
and the technologies and the tools.
We also had a category on addressing ethical and social implications of AI, which is just as important as AI literacy.
And we are getting ready to roll out an AI 101 course that would be available to all students, faculty, and staff to ensure the literacy.
And we were very strategic in the funding, welcoming and partnering with the colleges, with the faculty, with the staff on how to embed AI ethically and make sure that we support this and piloting some of this.
And so in the fall, everyone now has provided reports on the outcomes of these pilots so we can assess, evaluate, and see what is scalable.
