Morano asks about military sexual trauma services

New York City Council · Jun 22, 2026 · starts 1:16:48 · 1 min 17 sec

Morano asks about efforts to connect military sexual trauma survivors to trauma-informed services. Noah describes claims agent training to identify triggers and connect veterans to specialized mental health partners. Nicole highlights coordination with VA MST coordinators and the mayor's office to end gender-based violence.

Yesenia Mata

Given the high rates of military sexual trauma that I alluded to earlier that's been reported among LGBTQ plus veterans, what efforts has DVS undertaken to ensure survivors are connected to trauma-informed services?

Noah Bray

Oh, sure.

Noah Bray

Just that goes back again to just having those conversations.

Noah Bray

So especially with our claims agents, making sure they get the training that they need to kind of identify certain, I would say like a trigger word, which may lead them down a different conversation.

Noah Bray

So depending on what they're speaking about and that rapport that they build,

Noah Bray

We've built a bench as an agency with a lot of different mental health partners.

Noah Bray

And with each, I don't want to say flavor, but each one has a specialization that can deal with a certain, I would say like an incident in a different way.

Noah Bray

So through those conversations, it really allows us to kind of put that veteran, connect that veteran to that very specific mental health partner.

Nicole

I also do want to highlight that we work very closely with the VA MST coordinators.

Nicole

So there's a coordinator in each VA facility, as well as we work very closely with the mayor's office to end gender-based violence.

Nicole

And we just want to highlight that that is not a service that is just available to women veterans, but to all veterans.
