Q&A

Wong asks about connecting to LGBTQ nonprofits

New York City Council · Jun 22, 2026 · starts 0:40:56 · 1 min 31 sec

Wong asks if DVS needs help connecting to LGBTQ nonprofits. Mata welcomes the support, discusses staff training on organizing with LGBTQ+ community, and mentions revamping partner intake processes.

Phil Wong

Do you need assistance in reaching out to nonprofits that work with LGBT individuals and then work with them to identify veterans?

Phil Wong

Is there something you are currently doing or you might need help in connecting to these nonprofits?

Yesenia Mata

Yes, absolutely.

Yesenia Mata

We welcome any support.

Yesenia Mata

Myself, as my background as an organizer, myself, that is one of the major components that we are issuing at DVS, providing training to the staff as well.

Yesenia Mata

And it's just not training about services, but training when it comes to how do you organize with the LGBTQ plus community.

Yesenia Mata

But in general, when it comes to LGBTQ plus support, it keeps evolving as time goes.

Yesenia Mata

So that is one of the major components that we are making sure that the staff knows how to work with the LGBTQ plus community, but also how do we revamp our partnerships that we have.

Yesenia Mata

As I said before, I am revamping the list that we have that would entail an

Yesenia Mata

take for each of our partners to see what type of services that they provide.

Yesenia Mata

But as always, we want to make sure that we have LGBTQ plus veterans on the table so they could help us organize and be able to reach out to individuals in different boroughs.

Yesenia Mata

And we'd love to work with your office as well.

Phil Wong

Thank you.

Phil Wong

I'll have maybe around two questions, but please.

Frank Morano

Thank you, Councilmember.

Frank Morano

All right.
