Marte explains vote - housing, workers, anti-privatization
Council Member Marte discloses multiple associations. He initially planned to vote no but credits Speaker Menin and Housing Chair Pierina Sanchez for commitments on workers and housing. He calls for fighting privatization of public housing and ensuring workers are paid. Votes aye on all.
Marte.
I am disclosing on the record of the council's proceedings that Asphalt Green, Fortune Society, and Combody Productions are funded in a budget we are adopting, and I and my sibling are associated with those entities.
Permission to explain my note.
Permission granted.
Thank you.
Initially, I was going to vote no on this budget, but with the work and the commitment that the speaker has done for workers and working class families across our city,
and because of chair of our housing committee, Perina Sanchez, and her dedication on holding the line, it's gotten to a point where, you know, this is not.
All that we wanted, but we got to a place where we have the commitments, we deliver on some, and we have to keep on fighting.
And some of those fights are, you know, fighting against privatization of public housing, making sure that workers actually get paid for the hours that they work, making sure that people don't have to
give their lives just to have a roof above their heads, and that we choose keeping people in their homes instead of putting them in shelter and putting them in a path of
horrible outcomes.
And so I want to thank this council.
There's a lot more work that needs to be done.
There's a lot more commitments that need to be made.
And I look forward in the upcoming weeks that we can deliver, especially for workers in this city who continue to be blindsided by the administration.
Thank you.
I vote aye on all.
Thank you, Councilman.
Thank you.
