Chair Dinowitz presents Proposed Int 15A on background check requirements
Chair Dinowitz describes Proposed Int 15A, sponsored by Councilmember Shaun-Abreu, which would prohibit DOHMH from requiring a subsequent background check if one was already completed, unless the individual has not been employed for more than 180 consecutive days in the past five years. The bill aims to correct inefficiencies and ease administrative burden on child care providers.
Today, the Committee on Education will consider two pieces of legislation related to child care and early childhood education.
Proposed Introduction 15A, sponsored by Councilmember Shaun-Abreu, would prohibit the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene from requiring a subsequent background check of an individual for the purposes of working in a center-based child care program
if DOHMH had already completed a background check, unless the individual has not been employed by a child care provider in the city for more than 180 consecutive days in the past five years.
A child care program requests a background check, or a background check is otherwise required by law or necessary for the purposes of safety.
This bill aims to correct inefficiencies, inefficacies in the background check process and ease some of the administrative burden on child care providers.
