The Church of St.
Mary is the home of Manhattan's third oldest Catholic parish.
It was founded in 1826 to serve the rapidly growing Irish immigrant population of the Lower East Side.
And today it remains an important center of Catholic immigrant life in the community.
The building was completed in 1833, making it the second oldest existing Catholic church building in Manhattan.
Originally adorned with a Greek revival facade, prolific Irish-American architect of Catholic churches, Patrick Charles Keeley, designed its current Romanesque revival facade and towers in 1864.
