Brewer on Coney Island July 4th shooting, calls for gun violence action

New York City Council · Jul 16, 2026 · starts 1:36:20 · 1 min 8 sec

Council Member Gale Brewer addresses a horrific July 4th shooting in Coney Island where eight people were shot including children as young as six and seven at a NYCHA courtyard barbecue. She thanks the 60th Precinct for apprehending the shooter and calls on experts and community members to contact her office to collectively solve gun violence in Coney Island.

Gale A. Brewer

Thank you, Majority Leader.

Gale A. Brewer

I just want to take a moment to acknowledge that on July 4th in Coney Island, there was a horrific shooting where a family was celebrating July 4th in a barbecue in a NYCHA courtyard.

Gale A. Brewer

Eight people were shot, including two children as young as six and seven years old.

Gale A. Brewer

Gun violence is unfortunately becoming all too common in Coney Island, despite whatever the citywide stats may say.

Gale A. Brewer

And so I'm grateful for the 60th precinct for apprehending the shooter.

Gale A. Brewer

But this is a problem that we need to solve.

Gale A. Brewer

And so I don't pretend to be an expert in this.

Gale A. Brewer

I will be convening as many people as I can and experts on this issue to try to attack this and really solve it once and for all.

Gale A. Brewer

And so this is a call to action for anybody who wants to see gun violence ended in our city, but also in Coney Island.

Gale A. Brewer

You know, please get in touch with my office.

Gale A. Brewer

We want to work to collectively end this problem.

Gale A. Brewer

And my heart goes out to the family that's recovering at this time.

Gale A. Brewer

Thank you so much.

Shaun Abreu

Thank you, Councilmember.
