Kevin Morris testifies in opposition citing traffic concerns
Morris describes how the LIRR right-of-way funnels north-south traffic through 158th Street, creating chronic congestion. He notes increased car registrations post-COVID, nearby schools and mosque attracting traffic, and argues the development would exacerbate problems. He suggests developing at Flushing Airport instead.
So the thinking here was that
the wrapping the zoning, including the commercial overlay, would make the Galaxy Plaza shopping center entirely conforming
in terms of allowing the commercial use to continue and be conforming with zoning.
If the Galaxy Plaza Shopping Center or the Islamic Center were
redeveloped, they would be consistent with the rationale for the project that we're here seeking through zoning for.
