Speaker Menin: August recognitions including Black Business Month, Women's Equality Day, and Independence Days
Speaker Menin recognizes National Black Business Month, Women's Equality Day on August 26, and multiple Independence Days including Jamaican, Ecuadorian, Pakistani, Indian, Ukrainian, and Trinidad and Tobago.
So throughout the month of August, we have many important holidays and events to recognize.
August is National Black Business Month.
Black New Yorkers own and operate so many important businesses across our city, but they still face longstanding inequities.
I'm proud of the work that the council has done to cut red tape for business owners so that everyone
can afford to live here, stay here, and achieve the American dream.
August 26th is Women's Equality Day, commemorating the anniversary of women's suffrage being added to our Constitution 106 years ago.
I'm thankful for the advocacy of former New York Congresswoman Bella Abzug, who put this day on the calendar, and countless other women who paved the way for generations of women to come.
As a woman majority council, we benefit from their efforts each and every day.
There's a lot of Independence Days to celebrate.
So I'm going to be announcing a few of them.
August 6th was Jamaican Independence Day.
August 10th was Ecuadorian Independence Day.
Tomorrow is Pakistani Independence Day.
Saturday is Indian Independence Day.
August 24th is Ukrainian Independence Day.
And August 31st is the Independence Day of Trinidad and Tobago.
