Christopher Leon Johnson testifies against tax as anti-capitalist

New York City Council · Aug 18, 2026 · starts 2:26:55 · 3 min 5 sec

Christopher Leon Johnson opposes the tax, calling it a scam by nonprofits and DSA to line their pockets. He argues the tax penalizes success, and criticizes the administration for 'pocket watching' rather than supporting free enterprise and hard work.

Member of the Public - Katie Ann Presley

You may begin.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

Yeah, hello.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

My name is Christopher Leon Johnson.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

I oppose the rollout of the peer tax.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

Let me just clear that this tax is nothing but to make sure that these corrupt nonprofits and organizations like the Working Families Party and DSA keep on getting paid.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

We have a mayor that is penalizing success.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And that's not right.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

If you work your butt off, you deserve every fruit of your labor.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

This is a mayor that does not believe that people that are successful should reap the rewards of their success.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

The problem with these organizations that was outside City Hall Park this afternoon is that they're professional parasites.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

They're professional leeches.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

They're professional grifters that only care about getting paid through donations.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And they don't know, they don't understand about doing real work to get a paycheck.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

They just believe in stealing, stealing, stealing.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

So as I said before, this is none but a scam done by these nonprofits and the DSA just to line their pocket.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

This doesn't affect a person that's on Section 8.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

That doesn't affect the person that's on food stamps.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

It doesn't benefit them.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

At the end of the day, that's the only way for it, no matter what.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

Even if this tax was not implemented, EBT and Section 8 will always be supplied because that's a political suicide for any politician in New York City.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

So no matter what.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

But this is just not a scam.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And I shame on the city council for supporting this tax.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And I appreciate every member of the city council that is opposed to this tax.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And like I said before, this tax should not be implemented.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

I hope that in a high court that they say that this tax unconstitutional.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

It's a real unconstitutional tax that penalizes people.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And it really hurts people from really doing business with the city.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

Because why do you want to own two, three homes where you'd be taxed to hell for owning two, three homes?

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

Like I said before, if I'm successful, I deserve to be able to buy two, three cars.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

If I'm successful, I'm able to buy two, three phones.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

What's next?

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

I'm being penalized for having two, three phones.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

This is ridiculous.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

We have a mayor and these nonprofits like WP and DSA just jealous and salty at people who are just making money, who are just mad at the next person.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

They pocket watch, and that's what they're doing.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

They need to stop pocket watching.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And shame on the city council for allowing the pocket watch to happen.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And a lot of these guys, they're not men because men don't pocket watch.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And that's what needs to stop happening in 2026 is that this would be the anti-pocket watching year in this administration.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

But this administration is so worried about pocket watching instead of finding a way to line the pockets of people directly.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And just because you're part of, just because a nonprofit is lining their pocket doesn't mean that your pocket is ineffective.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

So this is ridiculous, man.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

I don't like it at all.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

I'm disgusted by this whole process.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

I do not support this at all.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

I guess I believe in a free capitalist commerce.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

If you work, you get.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

You work, you eat.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

Like the Bible said, I know a lot of people don't believe in the Bible, a man don't work, a man don't eat.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

And that's the problem with the cities that they award and lazy people.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

They want to award and lazy people while penalizing people that bust their butt and do the work to get food.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

So thank you.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

Thank you.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson

Thank you very much.

Member of the Public - Christopher Leon Johnson
