Chair Sanchez round 2: Bronx Plan status and interagency coordination
Sanchez asks when the Bronx will feel the Bronx Plan's impact. Director Weaver confirms interagency conversations have begun with MOPT, Mayor's Office of Equity, Deputy Mayor for Community Safety, and NYCHA, with community engagement planned for late fall. Sanchez urges inclusion of the Deputy Mayor for Community Safety.
The Bronx Plan.
The plan spotlights the Bronx, and this is much needed and appreciated.
And it talks about the all-of-government approach and the potential that it has to move the needle for our folks.
You know, in previous hearings, including in the executive in May, I talked about the troubling and, you know, alarming trend of the doubling of fires in the Bronx and Queens.
We talked about root causes.
We talked about what can be done.
So in the context of the myriad challenges facing the Bronx, we'd love to understand the status.
Have interagency conversations internally begun?
When will the Bronx feel the workings of the Bronx plan?
And just to put in a plug, a major plug, to please, please, please include the Deputy Mayor of Community Safety on the Bronx plan because it's so central to what we're dealing with.
Thank you for that question.
We actually had a call with the Deputy Mayor for Community Safety on the Bronx Plan this morning at 9.30, so happy to say yes to that question.
Yes, interagency conversations have begun on the Bronx Plan, led by HPD, led by HPD.
but with the Mayor's Office of Equity and Racial Justice, MOPT, and we are, again, bringing in the Deputy Mayor for Community Safety and also NYCHA into this work.
The goals are to really address building conditions, to address health disparities and support quality of life and public realm improvements.
And we are focused on both highest need areas in the Bronx, but also areas where
very many people live in existing affordable housing.
And so really thinking about ways that we can complement the affordable housing that we are providing in the Bronx with other initiatives like
streetscape improvements, like activating ground for retail, working closely with also the Mayor's Office of Early Child Care Education and really thinking about what other needs exist here.
So looking forward to really continuing to build out that work and to start community engagement sometime in the late fall.
And yes, on the fires as well.
Thank you.
