Council Member Gennaro introduces Resolution 622 on automated solar permitting
James Gennaro introduces Resolution 622, calling on the state legislature to require municipalities to adopt an automated permitting platform for residential solar installations, citing NYC's rooftop solar potential and the Solar App Plus program.
Councilmember Gennaro, followed by Dinowitz.
Thank you, Mr.
Majority Leader.
Today, I'm proud to introduce Resolution 622, calling upon the New York State Legislature to pass and the governor to sign S5781A6270, which would require
municipalities to adopt an automated permitting platform for residential solar.
installations.
Currently, contractors are forced to navigate different paperwork and approval processes, adding unnecessary time and cost that ultimately gets passed down to the consumers.
That is why the U.S.
Energy Department developed Solar App Plus, which was
specifically designed to address this problem.
It provides a standardized automated process for reviewing eligible renewable solar projects while maintaining important safety and code requirements.
Many states have already adopted this app.
And in New York City, city rooftops have the potential to house 10
gigawatts of solar generation at peak production.
New York should remove needless barriers to residential solar, lower costs for homeowners, and make it easier for communities across the state to participate in our clean energy future.
I hope you join me in supporting this important resolution.
Thank you.
Thank you, Councilmember.
