Deputy Speaker Williams on resolutions honoring Carmen de la Valade and Alvin Ailey
Nantasha Williams speaks about her two resolutions honoring giants of American dance, Carmen de la Valade and Alvin Ailey, whose careers transformed American dance and established NYC as a global center for Black artistry.
We will now move into the discussion of resolutions, beginning with Deputy Speaker Williams, followed by Councilmember Areola.
I just wanted to talk about my two resolutions as a forever dancer.
I am proud today that we are honoring two giants of American dance, Carmen de la Valade and Alvin Ailey.
Their careers helped transform American dance and establish New York City as a global center for black artistry and cultural expression.
Through their work, they expanded what could be seen on our stages, created space for generations of black dancers and choreographers, and left an influence that continues to shape the field today.
The legacies live not only in the work they created, but in the artists they inspired, the institutions they strengthened, and the generations who continue to find possibility through dance.
I am proud that this council is honoring their extraordinary contributions and ensuring their legacies remain part of New York City's cultural record.
I really just want to thank my colleagues for supporting these resolutions, to my staff and committee staff, Regina and Alejandro, whose work helped them bring them to the floor today.
Thank you so much, Majority Leader.
Thank you.
