Giunta presents AI policy: moratorium for 2K-8, restricted high school use
Giunta explains the AI policy: a full moratorium on student-facing generative AI for 2K through grade 8, and for high school, AI restricted to five vetted pilots, career readiness programs, and required AI literacy coursework.
To briefly review our policy on student-facing generative AI, our new policy represents a cautious, developmentally appropriate approach that strictly limits access to student-facing generative artificial intelligence during the school day,
especially for our youngest learners, for whom direct interaction and foundational skills are most important.
This aligns with what we know about child development and the limited body of independent causal research on these AI tools.
To that end, we have instituted a full moratorium on AI use in the classroom for students in 2K through 8 for the 26-27 school year.
Our policy for high schoolers is different.
High school students need guided preparation for a world economy increasingly driven by AI and new technologies, paired with instruction on how AI works, its biases and risks, and how to evaluate its outputs.
So in grades 9 through 12, student-facing AI will be restricted to three specific uses.
The first is five limited, carefully controlled high school pilots that involve vetted and approved AI programs.
Students can also use AI under teacher supervision if participating in career readiness programs, such as our career and technical education programs.
And finally, all students, all high school students will complete AI literacy coursework to understand how AI works and how to navigate the technology safely.
