Menin cites other states' and cities' screen time laws and AI concerns
Menin references screen time restrictions in at least six states and Los Angeles's limits, and highlights that more than half of American teenagers use AI chatbots for schoolwork, with research showing AI may harm independent performance.
New York City is not alone in confronting this issue.
At least six states, including Alabama, Iowa, Maine, Tennessee, Virginia, and Utah, have also addressed this issue by putting in place laws that are restricting, limiting class screen time.
And at least 10 other states have also enacted similar types of legislation.
Los Angeles has also adopted some limits, including a total of six hours per week of screen time for middle school students and 10 hours per week of screen time for high school students, and that includes homework as well.
Artificial intelligence also raises very significant issues and questions as well.
More than half of American teenagers report using AI chat box for their schoolwork, and one in 10 say that AI is
with all or most of their schoolwork.
And research suggests that while unrestricted AI may help students perform better on a particular task,
they perform significantly worse when they're asked to complete the exact same type of work independently without any AI assistance.
