Claire Mifflin testifies on containerization pilots, community composting, and bulk set-out day
Claire Mifflin urges DSNY to pilot shared recycling and composting bins alongside trash for residents above storefronts, calls for integrating containerization into SWAMP diversion goals, advocates for community composting expansion, and proposes a district bulk set-out day for reuse.
Hi, thank you.
Actually, our suggested pilots for containerization for small buildings would solve that.
And we really think that the commissioner himself noted that if you live above a storefront, say in a walk-up, you don't have a trash bin often, so you use a litter bin.
And he said he'll have a shared...
Empire trash bin in the street for those residents.
What about their recycling or composting?
What I'm asking him to do is to do a pilot for trash recycling and composting so the residents could bring all of them because I know very well residents above storefronts
the building owner can't fit those bins in if there's a storefront in the ground floor and the residents just have to bring bags down.
So he really should pilot it and I've suggested this multiple times.
Trash-only infrastructure for containerization is just not the way we need to go.
We know trash-only infrastructure incentivizes trash, and the swamp needs to look at containerization as part of
the means to getting to higher diversion, not as a standalone thing and just check if it makes diversion any worse.
I also want to say that community composting could be massively ramped up and tied into healthy soil, stormwater, street tree care, and make our green spaces more vibrant and make people care more about their neighborhood.
And I would also like on the circular economy to just point out something Anna Sachs has also been championing, which is a bulk set out day.
So instead of setting out bulk two days a week, different in each district, you'd have one day in a district where all the furniture and stuff set out.
So people would go shopping, essentially, to find the stuff.
And that's done in other cities and Seattle, I think, very successfully.
People know I need a new table.
I'll go out on Friday.
This district has Friday or this other district.
And even providers come and get that.
Thank you so much.
Thank you so much.
