Sanchez questions Gajwani on renewable natural gas production at Newtown Creek
Sanchez asks how much renewable natural gas Newtown Creek produces annually and how it's used. Gajwani says it's enough to heat about 6,500 homes, with the gas distributed into National Grid's system as renewable natural gas, monetized through the federal renewable fuel standard.
And speaking of Newtown Creek, how much renewable natural gas is produced annually by the facility?
I don't have that number offhand, but I do know that it is enough to heat the homes of about 6,500 homes in the city.
And so the city just uses that renewable heat to heat homes, and is it just sold within the city?
So the actual molecules of methane, of natural gas, that leave Newtown Creek are distributed into National Grid's natural gas distribution system as renewable natural gas, as a non-fossil alternative to natural gas.
There are different programs to monetize the environmental attributes of the renewable natural gas.
And so currently National Grid is participating in the federal renewable fuel standard.
And so that allows them to kind of.
Be able to
get revenue for being able to provide a renewable resource within the fossil infrastructure.
And we work with them to try and kind of maximize that so that they're able to pay off the large capital investment that they had made in their system sooner.
