Inspector Hout testifies on historic lows in murders and shootings
Inspector Hout reports the fewest year-to-date murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims in over 30 years of CompStat tracking, with murders down 24.1% and shooting incidents down 9.6%.
Good afternoon, Chair for Lees and members of the Council.
My name is Inspector William Hout.
I'm the commanding officer of the NYPD's Office of Crime Control Strategies.
I am joined here today by Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters, Michael Gerber.
On behalf of Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, we thank you for the opportunity to testify today.
The Office of Crime Control Strategies tracks and analyzes crime across the city.
Using data-driven approach, we develop strategies to reduce crime and enhance public safety.
Through the end of August, we have seen the fewest year-to-date murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims in New York City since we started systematically tracking the data over 30 years ago.
We have had a 24.1% decrease in murders from last year, 18 fewer murders than the previous record low.
And we are on track to shatter the record lows of gun violence that we set just last year.
Year to date, shooting incidents have decreased 9.6% and shooting victims by 11.9%.
That means 46 fewer shootings and 73 fewer people shot.
