PA Williams acknowledges summer challenges and community safety partners
Williams acknowledges the pressure NYPD faced during a busy summer with NBA Finals, World Cup, and other events. She praises community affairs and the Office of Community Safety/Crisis Management System, noting some violence interrupters have been harmed.
Thank you, Mr.
Chair.
And first, Inspector and Deputy Commissioner, I want to make sure we highlight that this was a very, very busy summer.
You acknowledged that in your testimony, NBA Finals, Knicks in five, the World Cup, sale to 50, everything.
FIFA, everything.
So I do want to acknowledge the pressure that NYPD was under to make sure all those things move slowly.
So thank you for that.
I think many partners for the past 10, 20 years have put so much effort into dealing with shootings and murders.
So I just want to acknowledge the difficult job that NYPD has.
I also want to shout out the community affairs who doesn't get the praise they should, having to manage a lot of police and public relations.
I do want to make sure we shout out the Office of Community Safety and the Crisis Management System, who are also doing just a dangerous job as well, not the same job
in the way you get guns off the street and not answering 911 calls in the way you do.
But I want to make sure they get acknowledged, some of them have been harmed.
I think that combination has helped.
I'm frustrated in the newness, I guess, close to 20 years, and I sometimes see the same thing happening over and over, and we're getting similar results.
I think it's great that we are historic loads of murder and shooters.
Those are real people, real names.
Sadly, a lot of those victims look like mine, and a lot of their mothers look like mine that are mourning.
So this is very, very, very personal to me.
But I don't want to see continued harms.
So I'm just trying to see how we continue to do things differently.
So you mentioned the crew takedowns.
