Public Advocate Williams celebrates historic crime declines
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams celebrates NYC's safest summer on record for shootings and murders, notes major crime down 6.2% year-to-date, and highlights that NYC remains one of the safest large cities in the U.S.
Thank you so much, Mr.
Chair, and this is an extremely important hearing.
I think the public is very concerned about public safety, and media is not helpful as they often warp what's going on to a doomsday scenario unnecessarily.
So data from the NYPD is really, really important for the public to see.
As I mentioned, my name is Jermaine Williams, public advocate for the city of New York.
Again, thank you, Chair Feliz and members of the Committee on Public Safety, for holding this important hearing and for the administration and PD for being here.
Mayor Mumdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch recently reported that New York City had its safest summer on record for shootings and murders.
That is an absolute applause line.
That is awesome.
According to the recently released data, major crime is down 6.2% year-to-date, or about 5,000 fewer crimes are reported citywide.
Additionally, there were no reported murders in the subway or NYCHA developments in the time period reported.
This is consistent with the larger trend that we have seen since the pandemic era spike in crime.
Most major crimes have fallen and have continued to fall since 2020.
And New York City is still and has been one of the safest large cities in the U.S.
This is something to celebrate.
