Council Member Brewer raises commercial rent tax as additional burden on Manhattan businesses
Brewer calls the Manhattan commercial rent tax horrible and asks SBS to add it to their list of considerations. Khan says he is aware of the CRT and believes state enabling legislation sets it up, and will take the concern back to City Hall.
I'll stop because my time is up.
Commercial rent tax in Manhattan, I hate it.
It goes from Murray to 96th Street.
No other borough has it.
We'd like to get rid of it.
Yes, you're for that?
I think you're referring to the state commercial rent tax.
No, it's the city.
Commercial rent tax goes from Murray Street to 96th Street, east and west.
It's an extra tax that's left over from previous days.
In Manhattan, we want to get rid of it.
Gorodnik got rid of some of it when he was in the city council.
We want to get rid of it for the storefronts.
So you could add that to your list of things that you're considering.
That is certainly aware of CRT.
OMB hell.
Certainly aware of CRT.
But our understanding is that there's state-enabling legislation that sets up the CRT system.
But we hear you, and we'll take it back to City Hall and our colleagues.
Thank you, Madam Chair.
CRT is horrible.
Yes, CRT.
Thank you, Councilmember Brewer.
