Morano Q&A with Nelson: accountability systems for service organizations
Morano asks what a meaningful accountability system would look like for organizations serving military families. Nelson recommends undercover testing of organizations, truly anonymous complaint procedures that protect identities from retaliation, and ensuring organizations never learn who filed complaints.
Well, we'll stay in touch.
And my last question, you spoke about experiencing disrespect within an organization that was supposed to support military families, and you recommended stronger complaint
procedures and independent evaluation without asking you to identify the organization.
or revisit a difficult experience, what would a meaningful accountability system look like?
Should organizations receiving city funding be required to have a confidential complaint process or report complaints to DVS and demonstrate how to resolve them?
Do you have any other suggestions about how we can handle that going forward?
Yes, I do believe it's something you said that I've actually spoken about prior to.
Going undercover into these organizations and companies.
And I've spoken to DVS about this and telling, they don't have to know your real story.
You could just come as if you're looking for service.
You can just come and put in a whole acting moment as if you're even a gold star and see how people treat you, see how they communicate with you, see what services that they provide for you.
And also I do feel that there should be a space where you can create a complaint.
Normally when you say complaint,
anonymous.
It's not really anonymous if you think about it.
I'm being honest with you because they'll still find out who you are.
Like when you call 911 and they're still going to know that you was the one who called.
So in my eyes, it will never be anonymous, but it has to make sure that their information is protected and that that organization will never know who made it.
Because what happens is some people will come out and take repercussions behind it.
And if they have all your information and you know who you are, you will be harassed.
This happens a lot.
Thank you, Dr.
Nelson.
Mr.
Passaro.
