Giunta says decoupling Regents is a major opportunity and outlines multi-year rollout
Giunta says moving beyond test scores as the sole measurement raises expectations. She says decoupling Regents from graduation opens doors for multiple demonstrations of learning, and NYCPS will build on student pathways, work-based learning, and affinity partnerships. She notes full implementation is targeted for 2029-30.
Moving beyond test scores as the sole measurement for student learning is an opportunity to raise expectations for our students.
Even though the regents are not going away,
Decoupling them from graduation requirements starting next year is a profound opportunity and major change.
It opens the door more widely for students to authentically and in multiple ways demonstrate their learning and readiness to graduate.
We are excited about the opportunity New York Inspires brings for our students in New York City public schools.
And we look forward to continuing our partnership with New York State Education Department on the rollout, as well as sharing what we see for the future with our students, educators, and families.
We are approaching this work with humility and optimism because we are not starting from scratch.
New York Inspires is a multi-year design and implementation effort.
When it is at full implementation in 2930, we will have spent years laying the foundation for our students'success.
We will build on the success of Office of Student Pathways innovations such as our STEAM centers, early colleges, P-TECH, and career and technical education schools, and the transformative, evidence-based, future-ready New York City.
Which is in over a third of our high schools and has a proven efficacy with substantial impact data.
We will continue to scale and sustain student pathways to increase participation in career-connected learning, such as work-based learning programs and apprenticeships, while deepening our investments in industry-aligned pathways with the support of both public sector and
industry champions in healthcare,
education, building trades, and sustainable green economy.
These examples
show us that rigorous, engaging, future-focused learning is already taking place throughout our system.
Our responsibility now is to learn from those successes, build on them, and create conditions that allow more students to benefit from similar opportunities.
