Katie Hansen clarifies graduation timeline: no impact this year, decoupling next year
Hansen says current seniors still graduate against 44 credits and generally five exams. If the Board of Regents adopts changes, current juniors and below will graduate without Regents exams, and the advanced Regents diploma remains an option. The new transcript is targeted for 2029-30.
um and everything i'm about to go through we've gone through with all of our school leaders at the spring engagement that dr chang uh described so that they were crystal clear about what to tell their teachers, families, students.
This year, there's no impact whatsoever on graduation requirements.
There's no proposed changes.
So our current seniors are graduating against the 44 credits and, generally speaking, the five exams to graduate.
If the Board of Regents votes to adopt the changes that they've discussed, that were just recently discussed at the September meeting, that will decouple the regents from graduation for students who graduate starting next year.
So that's our current juniors and below.
In addition, there's this move to the one New York State diploma.
Right now, we tend to think of it as a three-level hierarchy.
Local, which has those exam flexibilities that are primarily used by students with disabilities and some others.
Regents diploma, which is sort of the standard five assessments with scores of 65 or higher.
And the advanced regents, which will still continue to be an option.
The advanced regents requires students to do a specialized course sequence, some additional regents.
exams, quite robust.
So that will continue to be an option as an add-on to the one New York State diploma.
So that's for students who graduate starting next year, 2027-28.
The next real milestone after that is the new transcript, which is targeted for implementation in 2029-30.
The state will provide standards about how we will need to go about redesigning our transcript.
Our transcript is very standard, course credits, grades, assessment scores.
But the idea is to show students proficiency in the standards and in the portrait of a graduate and show a much more robust body of evidence.
So that's a few years down the line, 2029, 2029, 30 for implementation.
