Brewer asks about chief counsel memo banning Signal and OME's communication tools

New York City Council · Sep 22, 2026 · starts 0:52:06 · 1 min

Brewer asks about a January memo from the mayor's chief counsel telling mayoral agencies not to use Signal; Van Auken says OME does not use Signal and communicates via city email, phones, and Teams chats, while Brewer notes the memo went out to everyone.

Gale A. Brewer

And now back to signals.

Gale A. Brewer

I understand that in January, the head of the chief counsel to the mayor.

Gale A. Brewer

Said to all mayoral agencies, do not use signal.

Gale A. Brewer

Do you know anything about that memo?

Gale A. Brewer

Have you paid any attention to it?

Gale A. Brewer

Or that wouldn't be under you.

Gale A. Brewer

That would be under the other office of communications.

Gale A. Brewer

If you guys don't use signal, is that correct?

Member of the Public - Tascha Van Auken

We do not use signal as an office.

Gale A. Brewer

So how do you communicate with your many offices?

Gale A. Brewer

In other words, you've got to...

Gale A. Brewer

All the people you're engaging with.

Member of the Public - Tascha Van Auken

That's a good question.

Member of the Public - Tascha Van Auken

We use our city email, our city phones, our city teams chats.

Member of the Public - Tascha Van Auken

Okay.

Gale A. Brewer

So you know it's my understanding that that memo did go out to everybody, so it's kind of strange that we're all using Signal for communication.

Gale A. Brewer

We can use it for other things.

Gale A. Brewer

I will now call on Minority Leader Carr and then Public Advocate Williams to ask questions.
