Q&A

Brewer asks about disclosure language and hashtags; Melillo says CFB is reviewing standards

New York City Council · Sep 22, 2026 · starts 1:57:27 · 1 min 5 sec

Brewer asks how the CFB determines disclosure language and hashtags; Melillo says the CFB currently follows each platform's political advertising rules but is reviewing whether its disclosure standards should match paid-for-by notice standards for greater consistency.

Gale A. Brewer

And do you use certain language, hashtags, or whatever for disclosure?

Gale A. Brewer

So maybe that's something other agencies should pay more attention to.

Gale A. Brewer

How do you determine that?

Member of the Public - Amanda Melillo

One of the things we've been discussing internally as a result of this hearing, because right now we follow the practices required by each of the platforms.

They all have slightly different rules depending.

especially for political advertising, there's like a verification process that everyone has to go through.

So we go through that.

But one of the things I think we're currently looking at is our disclosure standards meeting the same standards as like a paid for by notice.

Member of the Public - Amanda Melillo

Because I think that we could probably be more consistent at using those.

As someone who I tend to see a lot of this content, both before it goes out and organically and non-organically,

it's generally pretty clear when we've partnered with a content creator, but I think this is just a good opportunity for us to sort of do a review and make sure it's as clear as possible.
