Commissioner Faiza Ali introduces herself and sanctuary trust
Commissioner Faiza Ali introduces herself as head of the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs. She says New York City's sanctuary status since 1989 has been foundational to trust between immigrant communities and local government.
Good morning, and thank you, Chair Encarnacion and Councilmember Farrell-Lewis, for the opportunity to testify today.
My name is...
My name is Faiza Ali and I'm the Commissioner for the New York City Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs.
Since 1989, New York City's sanctuary status has been foundational to the trust between our immigrant communities and local government.
Our city's local laws have helped strengthen public health and safety, empower immigrant New Yorkers to access city services, and ensure that they can participate meaningfully in civic life.
