Alexia Sol testifies in Spanish on suicide attempts and need for trans youth support
Alexia Sol describes lacking hormone therapy, surgeries, and emotional support as a young trans woman and having two suicide attempts. She urges New York City to invest in gender-affirming care and community health and supports Res 547 and Res 208; Cabán reads the English translation.
I say in Spanish.
I want everybody to hear your testimony, so I'm going to read the translation of it.
Good afternoon.
I'm going to skip the thank you to me and the committee.
Personally, when I was young, I did not have access to hormone therapy or surgeries, much less support.
I also did not have emotional support to transition, so I had to live a life that I did not really want.
It is sad to say that I had two suicide attempts because I did not know how to navigate life as a trans woman, because I was living an identity in which I did not feel fulfilled or safe.
This afternoon I am testifying because we want New York City to commit to being part of the change and ask you not to allow trans young people to live through what I experienced when I was young.
May no trans child have to suffer and cry alone in a room because they do not have access to hormone therapy and support, especially from their family and health care specialists.
These specialists, when they obtained their licenses, took a note to save lives instead of allowing a life to cease to exist.
Before denying access to hormone therapy to a trans person, think about what that person may be experiencing and thinking.
Perhaps what is in their mind is that there is no way out and that they cannot be who they really are.
And in any corner of the country or the world, a small human being may be thinking about giving up and ending their life today because society is denying them the right to live through their process of transformation and to be who they really are.
Today I want to speak directly to those trans young people who think they are alone.
I want to remind them that they are not, that they look at those of us who today have transitioned, that although it was not easy, at the end of the day our lives are similar.
to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar that crawls and struggles against wind and tide, but one day that caterpillar becomes a beautiful butterfly.
The coalition requests that the council continue investing in access to gender-affirming health care for uninsured and underinsured people, that LGBTQ plus community health organizations exist,
mental health services for young people, and that data collection respects privacy and helps identify gaps in services.
Coalition also strongly supports resolutions 547 and 208.
These resolutions will provide our community with the opportunity to navigate the health care system and find health care providers who understand the needs of our communities.
Trans people are being attacked at the national level, and we want New York City to continue leading in terms of good gender-affirming services.
It is a reality that many of our trans communities travel from other states to seek gender-affirming services.
We want New York to be the beacon that guides our community toward well-being.
All transgender and non-binary people deserve timely, affordable, and identity-affirming health care, supporting their physical and mental well-being.
We urge the Council to advance these legislative proposals, continue investing in community care, and strengthen accountability so that all New Yorkers can access the care that they deserve.
Gracias.
