Q&A

Farías asks what federal actions the office tracks and what Council support is needed

New York City Council · Sep 23, 2026 · starts 1:06:09 · 2 min 8 sec

Farías asks what legal developments Brown is watching and how the Council can help. Brown says she monitors the federal register, Supreme Court docket, and litigation, flags data as a key area likely needing legislative solutions, and wants to meet LGBTQI people in Council districts.

Amanda C. Farías

Are there any federal actions or legal developments that you're planning or the office is planning to watch more closely or track?

Taylor Brown

You know, I think that is something, I consider that an obligation of my office.

Taylor Brown

I think I'm often in contact with my colleagues and work closely with my colleagues in the Office of Chief Counsel as well as the law department in monitoring any

Taylor Brown

legal, regulatory, and especially federal action, I guess, tweet at this point, that could potentially impact LGBTQIA people.

Taylor Brown

So that is something, and again, so that goes to things like federal register, tracking the Supreme Court docket, and also just looking at litigations in both our federal and state courts.

Amanda C. Farías

And is there anything that comes to mind in terms of council support, whether that's for the office, for any of the initiatives, or any of the...

Amanda C. Farías

Federal level legal items that you folks are going to be tracking and watching, any support that can be coming from the council side?

Taylor Brown

Yeah, and again, so at a certain point I won't be able to reference my relatively short tenure,

Taylor Brown

but I will say at this stage preliminarily, not so much on that, and thinking about some of the sort of planning that I'm doing, one thing that's coming up for me and has been coming up for me in my practice as a civil rights litigator

Taylor Brown

is the issue of data, and I think we've been referencing that today.

Taylor Brown

And I do believe that that could and probably likely would require a legislative fix, or not fix, but solutions and innovation, I guess I should say.

Taylor Brown

At a very high level, when we work towards solutions for systemic issues affecting historically and intentionally marginalized communities, data is key for many reasons, including evincing the problem, understanding the scale of interventions required,

Taylor Brown

formulating solutions, monitoring their efficacy.

Amanda C. Farías

Thank you.

Taylor Brown

I should also say, and I'm also very eager to hear from you all and to meet with LGBTQI people in your districts to understand their needs and what's impacting them as well.

Taylor Brown

And so I just want to say that to you all.

Amanda C. Farías

I appreciate that.

Amanda C. Farías

Thank you for the responses today.
