Chair questions medication access and continuity
Brooks-Powers asks how DOC ensures people receive medication at scheduled times. Boyd cites ongoing collaboration with CHS and medication windows or housing-unit distribution, while Otonichar says therapeutic housing units can provide medication on site.
What steps is DOC taking to ensure a person in their custody has consistent access to their medication at the times they're supposed to take such medication?
Well, I mean, that's continued collaboration with CHS.
Anyone that's produced that requires access to medication is produced to the appropriate medication windows or, you know, distributed medication in the housing unit.
I mean, we have frequent ongoing conversations at the exec level, but also at the local level in each jail.
All of the wardens have conversations with the CHS staff directly on site to ensure that that continuity of care and access to medication is being afforded.
And I'll just add, one of the benefits of the therapeutic housing units is that medication can be provided on site.
So those are units where mental health professionals, actually they have offices, they're engaging directly with patients there, particularly on PACE unit.
If a patient wasn't able to receive medication from a pharmacy technician earlier in the day, the nursing staff may be able to engage with them better later that day so they don't miss the dose.
Thank you both.
