Chair Williams thanks donor and discusses public trust
Chair Williams thanks an anonymous donor for a $60 million gift to the NYPL for the Performing Arts. She emphasizes the committee's role in examining how libraries manage public trust and resources.
The committee knows that it takes a lot of staff and money to support these remarkable collections, and we should discuss that today.
Personally, I want to thank the anonymous donor who just contributed $60 million to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
which will go towards digitizing, preserving, and cataloging its 15 million item archives so that even more interested patrons here and abroad can access it well into the future.
As a staff member at the Center for Brooklyn History told committee staff, it is our job as librarians to preserve these documents and artifacts forever.
Given the enormity and importance of that work and the amount of money, including public money, that it takes to do it well, the committee is also cognizant of the fact that our city's libraries are in a position of extraordinary public trust
and that their work should be examined carefully.
