Council Member Aviles introduces Puerto Rico resolutions
Council Member Alexa Aviles thanks the committee and introduces the four resolutions on Puerto Rico. She connects the hearing to Arturo Schomburg's legacy of fighting for Puerto Rican and Cuban independence.
Buenos días.
So good morning, everyone.
Thank you, Deputy Speaker Williams and the members of this committee and everyone here from New York City and Puerto Rico who have joined us for this hearing today.
Today the committee is considering four resolutions on the future of Puerto Rico.
The self-determination of the island's people.
Resolution 27, 28, 494, and 372.
It is befitting that we are hearing these resolutions today at the Schomburg Center.
As the Deputy Speaker mentioned, Arturo Alfonso Schomburg was a black Puerto Rican activist who was deeply committed to Puerto Rican and Cuban independence.
He believed in a future free from colonial rule and self-determination of all people.
That fight for freedom and self-determination
continues in Puerto Rico.
