Segui Cordero discusses Project Esencia and Act 22
Segui Cordero opposes Project Esencia for its environmental and community impacts. She also supports repealing Act 22, noting that more than $20 billion in funds are lost due to tax privileges for the wealthy.
Victoria Ciudadana also joins the widespread opposition to the development of the Proyecto Esencia off the coast of Cabo Rojo, as it represents a direct assault on the environment and the quality of life of our southwestern region.
That is why we support Resolution 494 and call upon this Council to join the voices of the people of Puerto Rico opposing this type of neocolonial extractive project,
one that seeks only to displace local residents under the guise of economic development, a narrative that we have been time and time again promoted, resulting in prosperity for the few while extracting
profits from our people and displacing our communities.
Finally, and no less importantly, if we want to prevent Puerto Rico from continuing to cycle through economic and debt crisis and lack of access to water and energy, and instead provide the Puerto Rican people with a country where they are truly
alive in well-being, where they truly live in well-being, we must stop turning our archipelago into a fiscal paradise for investors at the expense of our people and natural resources.
More than $20 billion in funds are being lost due to these tax privileges for the wealthy, while the people of Puerto Rico struggle to survive amidst shortages.
That is why we also support Resolution No.
376, calling on the government of Puerto Rico to sign legislation, and finally, we appeal Act 22.
We strongly urge the Council to pass these resolutions and stand with us in solidarity without erasure.
Thank you.
