Smalls discusses research collections' role and thanks council
Smalls explains how QPL's research collections provide context for contemporary events like flooding in Southeast Queens. She thanks the City Council for its support and emphasizes the importance of diverse collections.
Our research collections are crucial in providing insight and context to contemporary events.
With the rise of extreme weather, the archives at QPL research and compile the history of flooding in Southeast Queens.
It chronicles how an area of mostly marshland became a farming community, the population boom that led to inadequate infrastructure for the area, and ongoing improvement efforts.
Their investigation reveals that flooding in Southeast Queens is a longstanding challenge that has been exasperated by climate change.
Through the preservation and development of our collections, these historical and contemporary resources shield against misinformation and distortion.
The library plays a crucial role in helping the public properly navigate and analyze data.
Not only do our talented staff answer questions and lend guidance, but QPL also offers classes on improving necessary research skills, deciphering information, and using our databases.
Queens Public Library's collection, whether our special collection at the Black Heritage Reference Center or at Central Library or any of our branch collection across the borough, allow individuals to immerse themselves in the past and present,
broadening and deepening their perspectives.
At a time when libraries are being attacked for giving people the right to seek and access diverse points of view,
we must continue to stand against bigotry, challenge historical misconceptions, foster critical thinking, encourage empathy, and inspire curiosity by ensuring our collections are diverse,
well-maintained, and readily available.
We are grateful to our elected officials, especially the New York City Council, for championing the city's public library systems and the work we do on a daily basis, and we hope to count on your support in the years ahead.
Again, Deputy Chair, thank you so much for allowing us to testify today.
