Kim Holland describes connecting returning students to fellowships
Holland says students who studied abroad are best positioned to compete for Fulbright, Marshall, and Rhodes opportunities. CUNY met with scholarship advisors to connect returning students and is sharing Gilman Scholarship information with campuses, even where no scholarship office exists.
Go ahead.
I absolutely agree, and I'm glad that you brought up Fulbright and these other opportunities.
The way we think of Fulbright and Marshall and the Rhodes and all of these is that the students who have studied abroad as undergraduates are the best positioned to compete for these opportunities.
And so we like to connect, and we actually met last spring with the scholarships and fellowships advisors to say, how can we better connect our returning students with you so that right when they come back and they're excited
and they're motivated, that they know who to go to.
Now, I will say some of our campuses have incredible resources in this respect and very strong track records.
There is not an equivalent point of contact to each of our institutions.
And so one thing that we're doing right now, because we can't magically create that equivalent resource at each campus, is for the Gilman Scholarship, which does apply for undergraduate opportunities.
We are going to share out information that our colleagues bring back from seminars with the Gilman Scholarship Administrator, the Institute for International Education.
We're going to share it out with all of the relevant points of contact that we can find.
And sometimes that might be a writing center.
If there isn't a scholarships office, then there are P.
people who can support students who ask the question, but we don't want students to be told we don't do this here because we absolutely can and we should.
We all sometimes quietly needle each other to embarrass each other to do better.
Well, I think maybe we can work with a chair to do that, do better.
I just put all of your, like, muse, because I'm a muse addict now.
So all of your scholarships showed up and a few more.
So put it in Muse and you'll get more.
