Stephen Ferst details advising sheets, career services, and international internships
Ferst describes revised CSI advising sheets that include workforce preparation and study abroad timing, new coordination with career services, and plans for international internships across CUNY. He says returning students often become go-getters who know how to pursue graduate school and jobs.
I have three specific.
I hope I can remember all three.
The first is the College of Staten Island, and I know other campuses have been creating
advising sheets that talk through a student how they would step through their academic career.
We have just revised those instead of eight boxes, there are now 16 boxes.
One whole set of those boxes is on what you can do to prepare to be ready for the workforce when you graduate.
We are building in to that side of that advising sheet when you can study abroad, when you should be thinking about how to use that study abroad experience, how to bring it forward.
I'm also personally connecting with our newest associate provost for student success, where Career Services sits in our campus, and we'll be working together to work with Career Services, connect with our study abroad office for that very reason.
Third, and that's actually four here, third is we are developing international internships that will be available across CUNY
for our community college students and for our four-year students that are overseas, these international internships, and they will allow students to have more career exposure.
And lastly, as we said, these are special students.
As you know from your own experience, when you get back, you have developed something that others
students haven't.
And you actually need, I don't want to say less support, but you know how to go out and get what you want.
You know how to make it happen.
And as these anthropology students have shown us, they go out and get PhDs.
They go out and get those jobs because they know how to.
Not to say that we don't support them through the system, but they are our go-getters.
